Welcome to Woodstock Cottage
Woodstock Cottage, in East Devon, can be found near the village of Chardstock, just 3 miles from Axminster and 9 miles from the World Heritage Jurassic coast at Lyme Regis. This dramatic stretch of coast has more recently become the setting for the popular TV series Broadchurch, and many of the filming locations can be found nearby.
The small market town of Axminster lies in the Axe Valley with its quaint villages and unspoilt countryside. The town, famous for its world-renowned carpets, has a good range of eating, shopping and leisure facilities and in the town centre can be found Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Stores and Canteen. The River Cottage HQ at Park Farm, where they hold special events, courses and dinners is only a short distance outside the town. www.rivercottage.net Axminster is also home to the Axminster Tool Centre, a veritable “mecca” for woodworking and engineering enthusiasts, and their Skill Centre runs a wide range of courses for both novices and professionals. www.axminsterskillcentre.co.uk.
The area is easily reached with good road links from London, the North of England and all points east and west. Axminster is also on the mainline from London Waterloo with an hourly service to London and Exeter.
This part of the country is fast becoming a “foodies’ paradise”, and as well as River Cottage in Axminster, there is the Mark Hix Oyster Bar in Lyme Regis with its panoramic views across the bay. Lesley Waters has also recently opened her cookery school at Halstock, some 20 miles away. This is all in addition to the numerous inns and restaurants serving locally produced food and freshly caught fish.
